Change Start Button

I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.



As you can see from the screen capture above it would seem that the five character limit isn’t etched in stone. The button expanded to accept the text I entered with no problem. I’ve been using the system for a few weeks now with no adverse effects. That’s not to say I won’t discover something down the road a bit, but for now I feel comfortable with the changes. If you’d like to try the procedure I used, the instructions follow.

Step 1 – Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems. Navigate here to download Resource Hacker.

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe as shown in Fig. 01.



The category we are going to be using is String Table. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.



There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used ElderGeek as shown in Fig. 03.



Compare the screen captures in Fig. 02 and Fig. 03 and you’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out in Fig. 02 is now active in Fig. 03. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. See Fig. 04. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.



Step 2 – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon



In the right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK



Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.



Note: A number of users have written to say that when the text on the Start Button is changed, the Search function from the Start Button (right click) context menu ceases to function. That's true, it does, and if I ever used that particular function I'd have been aware of the problem. I don't use it, so I wasn't aware, but now you've been warned. As far as I know there are no other caveats associated with the modification.

Hapus subkey {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, kemudian Restart komputer untuk melihat hasilnya. Untuk memunculkannya kembali, buat kembali kombinasi angka {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.

Winger ready for tough test

Cristiano Ronaldo is targeting a win in Barcelona as he tries to prove the current Manchester United team is the best in the club's history.

United face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday n the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final meeting.

Portuguese winger Ronaldo is expecting an absorbing encounter in Spain, but is hoping United can secure an advantage to take back to Old Trafford.

"At this stage, no game is easy," Ronaldo told Sport newspaper. "They are very important games where the pressure is very high for both teams and maximum concentration is required.

"Anything can happen.

"Our goal is to win as quickly as possible and to get the best result in the Nou Camp. I want to win."

Fantastic team

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted earlier this season that the squad currently at his disposal has the potential to be the best of his 20-year reign.

Ronaldo has echoed Ferguson's view, but concedes the team must finish the season with at least one trophy to justifiably be compared to previous United sides.

He added: "I believe that this team has the most talent, but this can only be confirmed at the end of the season by seeing what the team has won.

"There is a lot of talent and I believe we are going in the right direction. Match after match, we have demonstrated that we have a fantastic team, very talented and wonderful players, but at the end of the season we can give a definite answer as to whether this team is truly the best Manchester United team of all time.

"If we win the Champions League or the Premier League we will have a better idea."

Great honour

Ronaldo has scored 38 goals in a remarkable season for United, but has thanked his team-mates for helping him to set a new club record for a winger.

"I am very proud to represent this club," he continued. "I feel privileged to have played so many games at this stage.

"It is a great honour for me to demonstrate my ability on the pitch in front of 60 or 70,000 people who go there every weekend - it is amazing.

Wayne won't miss Wednesday

Sir Alex claims Wayne Rooney, Edwin van der Sar, Owen Hargreaves and Anderson will all be fit to face Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

Van der Sar, Hargreaves and Anderson were rested on Saturday at Ewood Park, while Rooney was forced off against Blackburn Rovers with a hip injury.

Rooney went down under a challenge from Ryan Nelsen midway through the second half in United’s 1-1 draw on Saturday. After a period of restricted movement, the England international appeared to loosen up but was eventually replaced by Ji-sung Park in the 90th minute.

“Wayne got a knock on the hip but I’m sure it won’t keep him out of Wednesday night’s match,” Sir Alex told Setanta Sports.

“Sometimes when you get a kick on the bone it can be very sore at the time but I expect he’ll recover.”

Two or three times a week I get an e-mail asking if it's possible to modify the Windows boot screen; the black screen that says Microsoft Home or Professional and has the scrolling green or blue bars. The modified screen is quite simple in this case, but you can make it as complex as you desire during the editing phase....

*** What is an exploit ***

An exploit is a computer programm, which circumvent computer security.
There are many ways to exploit security holes. If a computer programmer
make a programming mistake in a computer program, it is sometimes possible to
circumvent security. The coding of such programs, which attack (hack) the
programming mistakes or security holes is the art of exploitation or exploit
coding. Some common exploiting technics are stack exploits, heap exploits,
format string exploits, ...

*** What is an stack exploit ***

A stack exploit occurs, if you can write more than the size of a buffer
located on the stack into this buffer. If you can write more data,
as the size of the buffer (more than 1024 bytes in this example) a stack
overflow occurs. For example:

Why a stack overflow is a security threat ? The assembler instruction 'call'
push the return address on the stack. 'call' jump into a function in our
example the function is main. If the function returns with the assembler
instruction 'ret', it returns to the function pointer at the stack.
If you can overflow the stack you can overwrite the return address located
at stack. You can return to another location. The location should a pointer
to a shellcode address. Read alephonestack.txt for more information.

*** What is a shellcode ***

Shellcode are machine instructions, which launch a shell for example.
A shellcode looks like this:

Every char is a machine instruction. \xcd\x80 is 'int 80' for example. After
an overflow occur we need a address to return. This shellcode launch a
shell. If you point to the shellcode (after a stack overflow for example),
the machine instructions are launched and spawns a shell. Compile this
program. It tests the shellcode and spawns a shell:

United moved powerfully towards retaining the title with this tremendous victory against old rivals Arsenal on an afternoon of high drama at Old Trafford.

Owen Hargreaves scored the winner with a fabulous free-kick after Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Emmanuel Adebayor's opener early in the second half. But every man in a red shirt, not just those on the scoresheet, played their part in this priceless triumph.

Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park had retained their places in midfield after impressing in midweek against Roma but Carlos Tevez had to settle for a berth on the bench, with Sir Alex Ferguson selecting Wayne Rooney as a lone striker.

Arsenal’s side showed two significant changes to the defence which conceded four goals at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-final. German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann made a surprise return, with Manuel Almunia presumably injured, while Alexandre Song made a rare start at centre-back after Senderos’ poor show against Liverpool.

The Gunners made a lively start and after Adebayor’s run was halted by Rio Ferdinand on the edge of the area, Cesc Fabregas rifled a venomous shot just over the bar. Wes Brown will not want to see a replay after gifting the ball to Fabregas, one of three men nominated for both the PFA’s senior and young player awards.

Another double nominee is United’s Cristiano Ronaldo, of course - his first crack at goal was a free-kick which struck the wall.

Ferdinand was again called upon to block an Adebayor effort and another attempt from Gilberto was stopped when the second of two Arsenal corners in quick succession was punched less than convincingly by Edwin van der Sar. The Dutchman did better on the deck when Adebayor next threatened, diving to his right to hold a low shot.

The frenetic end-to-end pace was stretching the play and Brown fell foul of it when he caught Clichy late and was booked for a foul on the Arsenal left-back. Brown was later on the receiving end when the combative van Persie earned his yellow card.

Park missed with a header from Hargreaves’ left-wing cross and Rooney fired a shot narrowly wide of Lehmann’s right-hand post. The United striker went even closer moments later when Ronaldo beat Song on the byline and pulled the ball back – this time Lehmann had to stick out a leg to divert the shot wide.

No such intervention was required from van der Sar when Adebayor launched his next shot high into the Stretford End, nor when Gilberto sliced wide. It was open season for shooting, with Arsenal’s lack of accuracy perhaps the saving grace for some generous defending on United’s part. And even when Adebayor’s albeit tame shot was on target after being put through by Hleb, van der Sar claimed it
