Mikael Silvestre joined United's first-team squad travelling to Rome on Monday morning, with Nani being the only major absentee.

Silvestre hasn't played for the first-team since injuring knee ligaments against Everton in September, while Nani is still suffering from a thigh strain.

United had concerns over the fitness of Michael Carrick, Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs, who all came off in the 4-0 win over Aston Villa.

A Portuguese one-two from Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani plus a rare Wes Brown goal gave United the perfect Easter gift and destroyed any lingering hopes Liverpool had of breaking into the title race.

After all the pre-match talk of great attacking players on the park, it was ironic that defender Brown delivered the telling first blow on a pivotal afternoon in the Premier League. But the main talking point in the media could be the same one that followed last week’s match between Chelsea and Spurs - the relationship between referees and players.

For Chelsea’s Ashley Cole and ref Mike Riley, read Javier Mascherano and Steve Bennett - but don’t believe the hype that Liverpool’s midfield hardman
lost the match as well as his temper. The storm that probably had teacups flying in the away dressing room couldn’t mask the fact United were as superior to Liverpool on the day as they have been this season. And last season, and the season before that…

Blessed with his usual embarrassment of riches in midfield, Sir Alex Ferguson opted for an effective central trio of Michael Carrick, Paul Scholes and Anderson. The young Brazilian fashioned the first chance when he fed the ball through to Wayne Rooney in the sixth minute. The United striker shrugged off the challenge of Jamie Carragher but couldn’t beat Pepe Reina, the Liverpool keeper who was alive to the threat and blocked.

The first yellow card was shown to Mascherano - compared by his manager to United legend Roy Keane - when the Argentinian scythed into Keano’s old sidekick Paul Scholes.

Liverpool’s first shot across United’s bows came from an unlikely source as left-back Aurelio blasted the ball beyond the top right-hand corner after a well-orchestrated short corner. The Brazilian enjoyed the better of his early encounters with his direct opponent Cristiano Ronaldo, skipping around one challenge from the Portuguese in his own half and evading another in United territory before firing wide.

Ronaldo had more joy on the left flank, switching in time to strike the post in the 24th minute when Ryan Giggs’ whipped-in free-kick from the right was inadvertently flicked on by a Liverpool defender. When play swung to the other end, United were grateful to the nick off Nemanja Vidic diverting Steven Gerrard’s piledriver over the bar.

Another end-to-end episode just after the half-hour began with Reina almost spilling Giggs' cross over his own goal-line before pushing it out at the second attempt to trigger a Fernando Torres-led counter-attack. Liverpool failed to capitalise from the corner he won however and were made to pay when Wes Brown charged forward to power home a header from Rooney’s left-wing cross in the 34th minute. Reina was rocky again, flailing with a punch that missed both the ball and Brown who bravely ran the gauntlet.

Ben Foster admitted it was a “fantastic” feeling to finally make his first-team debut in the narrow 1-0 victory at Derby.

The goalkeeper was thrust into action at Pride Park due to the enforced absence of Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak, just a week after returning from an eight-month injury lay-off himself.

The 24-year-old, who joined the Reds in 2005 but spent the last two seasons on loan at Watford, told MUTV: “I finally feel
like a United player now!

“I’ve been here nearly three years and it’s good to finally get on the pitch for the first team in a competitive game.

“I’m not one for nerves – I just take things in my stride and try not to think about things too much. It’s a big thing to come back from injury and to be thrown straight into the first team, but I thoroughly enjoyed it – though it was a bit harder than I thought!”

Many pundits predicted a cakewalk for United against rock-bottom Derby, but the Reds spurned chance after chance and would have fallen behind in the first half had Foster not made two fine saves from Kenny Miller.

The keeper added: “The first one was a reaction save to my left and Kenny Miller was through one-on-one for the second, but I stopped it and I went in at half-time feeling good.

Cristiano Ronaldo feels he is not given enough protection from referees and fears suffering a serious injury.

The winger was denied a clear penalty against Portsmouth in the FA Cup quarter final defeat at Old Trafford. That incident, coupled with persistent fouling throughout the game, highlights an oft-felt view that the Portuguese is not protected by referees.

"It's very frustrating, the referee was unbelievable," he told MUTV. "He didn't want to give the penalty, he didn't want to give yellow cards - I'm very disappointed.

"Refs don't protect skilful players. I think about the Arsenal player (Eduardo) and I'm scared sometimes to do skills because some players do unbelievable fouls and the ref protects the defender, not the skilled player! It's very disappointing and I'm thinking a lot about changing my game. When referees don't give penalties, yellow cards or reds, it's difficult to play."

Sir Alex Ferguson was left aghast that referee Martin Atkinson did not award a penalty for Sylvain Distin's clear bodycheck on Ronaldo in the seventh minute. Ronaldo added: "He (Distin) didn't try to take the ball. It's a joke."

But it wasn't just refereeing decisions that disappointed the 22-year-old. "We lost today and everyone is disappointed because we were the best team," he said. "We created ten chances while Portsmouth created just one. It's frustrating to lose like that.

"We controlled the game, but we didn't score. Carrick had one cleared off the line, Patrice hit the post... we had a great chance to win the FA Cup but we need to think now about the Premier League and the Champions League. These are the priorities."

United may not have been at their flamboyant best, nor even their most devastatingly ruthless, but Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal three minutes from half time was enough to see the Reds through to the Champions League quarter finals.

Ronaldo's 30th of the season gave the Reds a tenth straight Champions League win at Old Trafford. Lyon, solid and tactically tight but, to their detriment, unadventurous, set the tone for this game. But United broke the mould – if only once – in a game of few chances.

It’s always difficult to second-guess Sir Alex’s team selection, especially with the multitude of options available to him. But the Reds boss still managed to spring a surprise by picking a side that did not contain three of his most experienced outfield players. Paul Scholes and Owen Hargreaves both took up places on the bench, while a calf injury ruled Ryan Giggs out.

At the start of the season, it might have been difficult to picture a midfield trio of Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Anderson playing in such a critical last 16 second leg tie. But, that in itself is a signal of how strong United’s squad is.

Crucially, no player in Sir Alex’s front six had played the full 90 minutes against Fulham on Saturday. It’s a freshness that the United boss has sought in recent weeks. The Reds started brightly enough in the opening minutes. With Sir Alex opting again for a 4-5-1 formation, Ronaldo and Nani pressed forward, Rooney worked tirelessly, while Anderson pushed ahead of Fletcher and Carrick.

Karim Benzema again looked dangerous whengiven space, and Juninho had a few early free-kicks to test United’s rearguard. But the Reds, marshalled by Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, looked solid. More and more the game was played out tactically; Lyon content not to concede, looking for a breakaway; United probing for a way through but not going full pelt with a valuable away goal in their armoury. It was less the clichéd chess match, more who blinked first.

Fortunately for United, it was Lyon. The French side failed to clear Anderson’s shot on 42 minutes, and Ronaldo’s delicate touches eight yards out drew him clear of Francois Clerc, and his shot sneaked inside Gregory Coupet’s near post.

Lyon’s game-plan changed very little in the second half, keeping it tight and hoping to snatch a goal on the counter. United chose a similar tactic, hoping to draw Lyon out. After 65 minutes Nani had a shot that arrowed narrowly over, but other than that United were quiet in front of goal until the final 15 minutes. The introduction of Carlos Tevez, United's scorer in the first leg, in place of Anderson may have seemed a bold attacking move. But he was instructed to drop deep and keep possession, providing an outlet on the break.

United, though in control, were not home and dry. Substitute Kader Keita found space in the Reds’ penalty area and struck the post on 74 minutes. But it was a rare breakthrough. The Reds weren’t without chances to put the game out of reach. Rooney latched onto Hatem Ben Arfa’s mystifying back-pass, but he couldn’t beat Coupet. Then Nani burst down the right channel and elected to cross the ball when he should have shot.

With ten minutes remaining, Lyon boss Alain Perrin brought on Fred and went to a more attacking 4-4-2 formation, but in the end their own negativity had worked against them and time ran out. For United this may not have been a resounding victory, but against well-organised and tactically stubborn opponents, it was a professional job well done.

Brazilian playmaker Juninho has warned United: "do not rule us out" of the Champions League last 16 tie, despite the Reds snatching a crucial late goal in the first leg.

The French champions are in Manchester on Tuesday with the tie tipped slightly in United's favour after Carlos Tevez's goal earned a 1-1 draw in Lyon two weeks ago.

Lyon appeared headed for victory after Karim Benzema's excellent opening strike just before the hour mark. But Juninho says the Reds would be ill-advised to think the second leg is cut and dry.

"We were disappointed not to win after taking the lead," he tells United Review. "But we knew that, along with Inter Milan, Manchester United were the best team in Europe and have many players who can do you damage.

"Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez – what an attacking line-up! Against a team like United, you have to play perfectly. We nearly did it – but not quite. But the Lyon squad is still calm. The pressure is on United to progress to the quarter finals."

Lyon have been used to battling against the odds in this season's Champions League. After a terrible start to their group campaign, they pulled out all the stops to progress to the knockout stages, a lesson Juninho says could serve them well at Old Trafford.

"We are still in this tie," he says defiantly. "Do not rule us out yet. You need technique and strong characters to win silverware and we have those. We have proved a number of times our capacity to achieve in big matches at stadiums in Glasgow, Stuttgart and Paris."

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo both scored twice as United closed the gap on Arsenal at the top with an emphatic victory at St James’ Park.

Buoyed by news of the Gunners’ 2-2 draw at Birmingham earlier in the day, the Reds dominated from start to finish to record their second convincing win over Newcastle in as many months.

Ronaldo set up Rooney for the opener before the Portugal winger bagged his 28th and 29th goals of the season to put United out of sight.

Abdoulaye Faye pulled one back but Rooney’s superb second and a late strike from substitute Louis Saha left Newcastle still searching for their first win since Kevin Keegan returned to the club.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson, mindful of the need to keep his squad fresh as they chase three trophies, made four changes to his starting line-up after the midweek draw in Lyon.

In came Nani, Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Carlos Tevez for Anderson, Paul Scholes, Owen Hargreaves and Ryan Giggs, with the latter two not even on the bench.

Keegan’s men had conceded 11 goals in four games coming into the match and United threatened to open them up at will early on.

Rooney ready to lift Reds

Wayne Rooney will be back for the Reds this weekend against Arsenal in the FA Cup, and John O’Shea says the Reds forward is capable of giving United an injection of confidence.

The effect that Rooney’s suspension-enforced absence had on the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City was palpable. However, O’Shea refuses to use the lack of Rooney’s presence as an excuse for failing to make more of a fight of Sunday’s derby.

“Wayne can lift players around him,” he told MUTV. “He is infectious with his work rate. He gets the crowd buzzing.

“But we were missing other players as well. The team we had out was good enough to win that game. You can always say we’re missing this player, or that player. But we had the squad to cope. We’ve got so many talented players that you hoped one player would conjure something. It just didn’t happen at all for us.”

Whilst not wanting to gloss of one of the most disappointing results of the 2007/08 calendar, O’Shea insists the squad cannot afford to wallow in pity.

“We’re all just waiting for the next game to come around,” he added. “We’re still in a great position in three competitions. We can’t just forget a disappointing result, especially against our city rivals, but we do have a lot to be positive about. We’ve got to make sure we bounce back straight away and go on a long winning run.”

With Rooney back in the team, that seems a more achievable goal. But Sir Alex Ferguson would be keen to point out that United didn’t get to this position operating as a one-player team. And against an in-form Arsenal team at the weekend, the responsibility cannot fall solely on Rooney's shoulders.

McLaren were the team to beat on Tuesday, as seven other squads joined early birds Red Bull and Williams for a second day of testing at the Spanish circuit of Jerez. The British team’s Lewis Hamilton clocked a best lap of 1m 19.102 to finish almost two-tenths of a second ahead of Pedro de la Rosa in the second MP4-23.

Both McLaren drivers focused on aerodynamic work and covered over 170 laps during the day. Tester De la Rosa will hand over testing duties to race driver Heikki Kovalainen on Wednesday.

Wenger: We're no fools

Arsene Wenger insists his Gunners won't take anything for granted in the title race, despite going five points clear of United.

The Arsenal boss seemed relieved to have won the game in hand over the Reds - "We were a bit under pressure to take advantage of the situation" - and warned of the challenge ahead.

"There is still a long way to go. You could see again tonight that as soon as you are not at your best, you can drop points," Wenger told arsenal.com, after a tense 2-0 win over Blackburn.

"With twelve games to go, we are in a good position and we believe we can do it but we are not a fool. We know it's far from being over and we will have to fight until the last...minute, certainly. We have a hard programme in front of us."

The next match in Arsenal's programme is, of course, their FA Cup fifth round tie against United. Wenger's squad could be bolstered by the return of three players, including two who were away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Carrick: Title race still on

Michael Carrick couldn't hide his disappointment with the result and the performance in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester City, but rejects the idea that the loss has seriously dented United's title hopes.

The midfielder struck the Reds' only goal in added time, but it proved nothing more than a consolation.

“Scoring doesn't really mean much because we lost, we’re all desperately disappointed,” he told MUTV. "We never got going and didn’t create the chances we normally do. That’s not like us. It was good to see that the minute’s silence was well observed. But in terms of the game we’re not going home happy.”

City took the lead midway through the first half through Darius Vassell, with Benjani Mwaruwari grabbing a second just before the interval. It left the Reds with a mountain to climb, heights Sir Alex’s men were unable to scale.

“Once City got the two goals it was hard to come back from it,” added Carrick. “They set out their game plan and it worked for them. One goal down, you always believe you’ve got a chance of coming back, but two is difficult. We needed to score right after half time to give us momentum, but when we did score it was too little, too late.”

Arsenal could move five points clear if they beat Blackburn at the Emirates Stadium on Monday, but Carrick firmly believes the Gunners will slip up before the end of the campaign.

“There are still games to play,” he said. “I don’t think Arsenal will go the rest of the season without dropping points. If they did, fair play to them. There are still going to be ups and downs in the title race, and hopefully there will be more ups for us and we can overtake them.”

Yang jelas kita perlu menikmati saat-saat bertengkar itu, sebagaimana
lebih menikmati lagi saat saat tidak bertengkar.
Bertengkar itu sebenarnya sebuah keadaan diskusi, hanya
sajadihantarkan dalam muatan emosi tingkat tinggi.

Kalau tahu etikanya, dalam bertengkarpun kita bisa
mereguk hikmah,betapa
tidak, justru dalam pertengkaran, setiap kata yang
terucap mengandung muatan perasaan yang sangat
dalam, yang mencuat
dengan desakan energi yang tinggi, pesan pesannya terasa kental,
lebih mudah dicerna ketimbang basa basi tanpa emosi.

Tulisan ini murni non politik,
jadi tolong jangan tergesa-gesa membacanya.

Bacalah dengan sabar, lalu renungi dengan baik,
setelah itu...terapkan dalam keseharian kita.......
setuju ??.....

Suatu ketika seseorang berbincang dengan orang yang akan menjadi
teman hidupnya, dan salah satunya bertanya; apakah ia bersedia
berbagi masa depan dengannya,dan jawabannya tepat seperti yang diharap.
Mereka mulai membicarakan : seperti apa suasana rumah tangga ke depan.

Salah satu diantaranya adalah tentang apa
yang harus dilakukan kala mereka bertengkar.
Dari beberapa perbincangan hingga
waktu yang mematangkannya, tibalah mereka pada
sebuah Memorandum of
Understanding,bahwa kalaupun harus bertengkar, maka:

1. Kalau bertengkar tidak boleh berjama'ah

Cukup seorang saja yang marah-marah, yang terlambat mengirim
sinyal nada tinggi harus menunggu sampai yang satu reda.
Untuk urusan marah pantang berjama'ah, seorangpun sudah cukup membuat rumah jadi
meriah. Ketika ia marah dan saya mau menyela, segera
ia berkata "STOP"
ini giliran saya ! Saya harus diam sambil istighfar.
Sambil menahan senyum saya berkata dalam hati : "kamu makin cantik
kalau marah,makin energik ..."

Dan dengan diam itupun saya merasa telah beramal sholeh, telah
menjadi jalan bagi tersalurkannya luapan perasaan hati yang
dikasihi... "duh kekasih .. bicaralah terus, kalau dengan itu hatimu
menjadi lega, maka dipadang kelegaan perasaanmu itu aku menunggu ...."
Demikian juga kalau pas kena giliran saya "yang olah raga otot muka",
saya menganggap bahwa distorsi hati, nanah dari jiwa yang tersinggung
adalah sampah, ia harus segera dibuang agar tak menebar kuman, dan saya
tidak berani marah sama siapa siapa kecuali pada
isteri saya :)

Maka kini giliran dia yang harus bersedia jadi keranjang sampah.
pokoknya khusus untuk marah, memang tidak harus berjama'ah, sebab ada
sesuatu yang lebih baik untuk dilakukan secara berjama'ah selain marah :)

2. Marahlah untuk persoalan itu saja, jangan ungkit yang telah terlipat
masa (maksudnya masa lalu kita)

Siapapun kalau diungkit kesalahan masa lalunya, pasti terpojok, sebab
masa silam adalah bagian dari sejarah dirinya yang tidak bisa ia ubah.

Siapapun tidak akan suka dinilai dengan masa lalunya. Sebab harapan
terbentang mulai hari ini hingga ke depan. Dalam bertengkar pun kita
perlu menjaga harapan dan bukan menghancurkannya.
Sebab pertengkaran di antara orang yang masih mempunyai harapan, hanyalah sebuah foreplay,
sedang pertengkaran dua hati yang patah asa,
menghancurkan peradaban cinta yang telah sedemikian mahal dibangunnya.

Kalau saya terlambat pulang dan ia marah,maka kemarahan atas
keterlambatan itu sekeras apapun kecamannya, adalah "ungkapan rindu yang
keras". Tapi bila itu dikaitkan dgn seluruh keterlambatan saya, minggu
lalu,awal bulan kemarin dan dua bulan lalu, maka itu membuat saya terpuruk jatuh.

Bila teh yang disajinya tidak manis (saya termasuk penimbun gula),
sepedas apapun saya marah,maka itu adalah "harapan ingin disayangi
lebih tinggi". Tapi kalau itu dihubungkan dgn kesalahannya kemarin
dan tiga hari lewat,plus tuduhan "Sudah tidak suka lagi ya dengan saya",
maka saya telah menjepitnya dengan hari yang telah pergi, saya
menguburnya di masa lalu, ups saya telah membunuhnya, membunuh cintanya.

Padahal kalau cintanya mati, saya juga yang susah... OK, marahlah
tapi untuk kesalahan semasa, saya tidak hidup di
minggu lalu, dan ia pun milik hari ini .....

3. Kalau marah jangan bawa-bawa keluarga

Saya dengan isteri saya terikat baru beberapa masa, tapi saya dengan
ibu dan bapak saya hampir berkali lipat lebih panjang dari itu, demikian
juga ia dan kakak serta pamannya. Dan konsep Quran,
seseorang itu tidak
menanggung kesalahan fihak lain (QS.53:38-40).

Saya tidak akan terpantik marah bila cuma saya yang dimarahi, tapi
kalau ibu saya diajak serta, jangan coba coba. Begitupun dia,
semenjak saya menikahinya, saya telah belajar mengabaikan siapapun di
dunia ini selain dia, karenanya mengapa harus bawa bawa barang lain ke
kancah "awal cinta yang panas ini".

Kata ayah saya : "Teman seribu masih kurang, musuh satu terlalu banyak".

Memarahi orang yang mencintai saya, lebih mudah dicari ma'afnya dari
pada ngambek pada yang tidak mengenal hati dan diri saya..".
Dunia sudah diambang pertempuran, tidak usyah ditambah
tambah dengan memusuhi mertua!

4.Kalau marah jangan di depan anak-anak

Anak kita adalah buah cinta kasih, bukan buah kemarahan dan kebencian.
Dia tidak lahir lewat pertengkaran kita, karena itu, mengapa mereka
harus menonton komedi liar rumah kita. Anak yang melihat orang tua
nya bertengkar, bingung harus memihak siapa. Membela ayah,
bagaimana ibunya. Membela ibu, tapi itu 'kan bapak saya.

Ketika anak mendengar ayah ibunya bertengkar :
* Ibu : "Saya ini cape, saya bersihkan rumah, saya masak,
dan kamu datang main suruh begitu, emang saya ini babu ?!!!"
* Bapak : "Saya juga cape, kerja seharian, kamu minta

Over time, as the wheels were moved closer to the chassis, the front wings overlapped the front wheels when viewed from the front. This created unnecessary turbulence in front of the wheels, further reducing aerodynamic efficiency and thus contributing to unwanted drag. To overcome this problem, the top teams made the inside edges of the front wing endplates curved to direct the air towards the chassis and around the wheels. Many teams later introduced sculpted outside edges to the endplates to direct the air around the front wheels. This was often included in the design change some teams introduced to reduce the width of the front wing to give the wheels the same position relative to the wing in previous years. The interaction between the front wheels and the front wing makes it very difficult to come up with the best solution, and consequently almost all of the different teams have come up with different designs

The relationship between the front wing and the track is a delicate one; with the wing generally being more efficient the closer it is to the track. Therefore, the front
wing is low to the ground to obtain as much advantage from ground effect as possible, and generally has one full spanning flap. Developments usually concentrate on the profile of the wing, and the use of flaps. However, Ferrari recently angled the leading edge of the wing to form a forward racing V-shape. This comes from flow
visualizations on the wing, which shows its suction power is so strong that it pulls air in from angles not straight with the centerline. This means that the air is approaching a normal, straight leading edge at an angle to it, and therefore not working the wing to its full potential. By turning the edge by the correct angle, maximum efficiency will be obtained.The part of the front wing, which tends to change most in design, is the endplate. The primary function of this feature is to stop
the high-pressure air on the top of the wing from being encouraged to roll over the end of the wing to the low-pressure air beneath, causing induced drag. Additionally, the design aim of the endplates is to discourage the dirty air created by the front tire from getting under the floor of the car. Further to these, some teams use 'splitters', which are vertical fences, attached to the undersurface of the front wing, to assist the endplate

The wheels of a formula one car probably induce the most drag of any part of the car.Unfortunately, have yet to be redesigned to reduce aerodynamic drag.Hindering this innovation are certain technical regulations.One such regulation is that the wheels cannot be covered.F1 wheels must to be the shape they are and this causes separation behind them.This separation causes large amounts of form drag.The amount of generated skin friction drag is minimal in comparison.So far, it appears that not much can be done to reduce form drag on the wheels, however teams have used the front wing to try to deflect the oncoming air around the front tires.

Front wing and nose cone assembly

The front wings on the car can produce 25-40% of the cars downforce.Each front aerofoil is made a mainplane (1) running almost the whole width of the car suspended from the nose (4). Onto this are fitted two aerofoil flaps (2), one on each side, which are the adjustable parts of the wing. These flaps are usually made of one piece of carbon fiber, but Ferrari has used two small flaps rather than one large one. On each end of the mainplane there are endplates The wing flap on either side of the nose cone is asymmetrical. It reduces in height nearer to the nose cone as this allows air to flow into the radiators and to the underfloor aerodynamic aids. If the wing flap maintained it's height right to the nose cone, the radiators would receive less airflow and therefore the engine temperature would rise. The asymmetrical shape also allows a better airflow to the underfloor and the diffuser, increasing downforce. The wing mainplane is often raised in the center. This again allows a slightly better airflow to the underfloor aerodynamics, but it also reduces the wings ride height sensitivity

You’ll never stop Ronaldo! That was the message from Old Trafford last night as Manchester United’s Portuguese ace continued his astonishing scoring run.
He notched twice in the space of four first-half minutes to put Sir Alex Ferguson’s side on course for another regulation win.
Ronaldo has scored nine in his last five games, and has failed to hit the net in only two of his last 16 outings.
Last night’s first was a one-on-one against keeper David James, but the second was a stunning free kick that he simply slammed over the wall.

Stretching superlatives and defences alike, Cristiano Ronaldo continues on his remarkable path. The prolific Portuguese may be better than the best around the world and, indeed, better than Best.

It is now 25 goals in 23 starts for Ronaldo, whose domination for a second successive Premier League season has now extended to overcoming Tottenham in the FA Cup. He is on course to surpass the 32 goals that is the current record for a Manchester United winger. That was set by George Best four decades ago and, while it once bordered on blasphemy at Old Trafford to suggest as much, Ronaldo may be the superior player.

In the manner of the great goalscorers, he has the capacity to decide games where his involvement has been peripheral. That is a trait more associated with, say, Ruud van Nistelrooy, than Ronaldo but as arguably the Premier League's two finest strike partnerships met at Old Trafford, the match was decided by the country's most productive winger.

In the process, he contrived to upstage Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez plus Robbie Keane and Dimitar Berbatov. And, not for the first time, he proved his manager wrong. This week, Sir Alex Ferguson made the remarkable admission that: 'I signed him as a winger, pure and simple. I didn't spot his goalscoring potential at all.'

It has been a welcome benefit nonetheless. The engine air intake has been placed further behind the headrest and a sort of long splitter (yellow arrow), which continues towards the very slim engine cover, has been added to reduce the area's cross section and diminish disruption to the airflow. In line with new regulations, the side protection around the driver's helmet (red arrow) has also been heightened. This connects to the rear bodywork in a more abrupt way to minimise the additional drag it creates.

McLaren MP4-23 - rear bodywork

Compared to the MP4-22, the rear of the car has been visibly lowered, with the exhaust pipes now placed further to the side. There are new movable covers (1), which could be replaced with cooling slits as the season progresses. The winglet behind the venting chimney (2) has also been refined. Rather than being curved, as on the MP4-22, the profile of its top edge is now completely flat. This increases the quantity and pressure of the airflow directed towards the rear wing, and uses the low pressure of the exiting hot exhaust gasses to accelerate that airflow.

McLaren MP4-23 - front suspension

The changes made to the car's front suspension are particularly interesting. As on the Ferrari F2008, the front of the chassis now higher than that of its predecessor, hence the quantity of airflow passing underneath the car has been dramatically increased. As a result, the team have angled the lower wishbone (2) downwards and increased the number of small sculpted winglets (1) underneath in order to manage the airflow more efficiently.

STUTTGART, Tim Formula 1 McLaren, Senin (7/1) memperkenalkan mobil terbaru mereka yang akan dipakai pada musim balap tahun ini. Mobil terbaru tim asal Inggris ini diberi nama MP4-23.

Acara pengenalan mobil terbaru McLaren ini berlangsung di Museum Mercedes-Benz di Stuttgart, Jerman. “Target utama kami adalah membawa pembalap dan tim bersaing untuk merebut gelar juara dunia,” ungkap bos McLaren, Ron Dennis.

Tahun lalu, McLaren menempatkan dua pembalapnya, Lewis Hamilton dan Fernando Alonso, di posisi dua dan tiga. Namun di kategori konstruktor, McLaren tidak mendapat angka setelah dihukum akibat kasus mata-mata terhadap Ferrari.

Tahun ini, Alonso hengkang ke Renault dan posisinya digantikan Heikki Kovalainen.

“Semua orang bekerja sangat keras di akhir tahun 2007 untuk membuat mobil ini siap secepat mungkin dan membuat pembalap kami bisa melakukan tes selama mungkin sebelum seri pertama balap tahun 2008 berlangsung di Australia, 16 Maret mendatang,” jelas Dennis.

Owen's Wembley mission

Success in this season’s FA Cup won’t just provide Owen Hargreaves with another winners’ medal – it could also afford the 26-year-old his first run-out at Wembley Stadium.

It seems incredible that Hargreaves, now a regular in the national side, has never played at the home of English football. And yet, following United’s win over Spurs in the FA Cup fourth round on Sunday, Hargreaves told MUTV of his ambition to go all the way in this season’s competition.

“We’ll just take it game by game and we’ll focus on the next one once we know our opposition,” he said. “But hopefully we’ll get to Wembley. It’s still a long way away and there’s lots of football to be played.

“I’ve never played at Wembley before. I’ve sat on the bench for England once or twice and I was injured when United were there for the Community Shield last year. It would be nice if we could get there.”

There is a chance Hargreaves could fulfil his ambition of playing on the hallowed Wembley turf before May’s FA Cup final. If picked by new manager Fabio Capello, the former Bayern Munich midfielder could line up for England against Switzerland in a friendly match on Wednesday 6 February.

The most recent, and arguably most painful, meeting came in the 2005 cup final. Despite dominating for 120 minutes, United failed to break the 0-0 deadlock and lost 5-4 on penalties.

The most memorable, of course, was the '99 semi final replay - Giggs' shirt-swinging celebration after his 109th minute winner at Villa Park indellibly etched in every United fan's mind.

United and Arsenal will play out the tie of the round after being paired together in the FA Cup last 16.

Having overcome Tottenham in Sunday's thrilling tie at Old Trafford, the Reds will now entertain Arsene Wenger's side at Old Trafford in the fifth round of the competition.

The Reds may feel slightly unfortunate to have drawn such difficult opponents, especially as Chelsea and Liverpool were handed home ties against Huddersfield and Barnsley respectively.

Incredibly, United have now drawn Premier League opposition in each of the last 10 FA Cup ties (plus two replays). In order, they are: Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Watford, Middlesbrough, Reading, Portsmouth, Aston Villa, Liverpool.

You have had three days in the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 this week, what are your first impressions of the car and the team?
I am really excited after my first test with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team. Everyone has made a huge effort to get two new cars out on track this early in January and I have really enjoyed every day so far.

Are you settling in well with the test team and your engineers?
Absolutely, everyone has been really helpful and I feel very welcome in the team.

What has been your focus at the test in Jerez last week?
The most important thing has been to become familiar with the way the team operates and to get to know all the people in the test team. It is also important to get the feel for MP4-23 and to understand all the systems in the car.

Has it been an easy process to adapt to the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes car, are there any key basic operational differences to the Renault?
It has been quite easy, I was reasonably happy first of all with my seat and instruments which sometimes can take some time to get right. Of course there are some systems that function differently to Renault but we have been able to go through many of them already at the McLaren Technology Centre before the test so it's been ok so far.

You have just completed a positive week in Jerez, do you expect all the tests to run so smoothly?
You never know how the new car will behave and reliability is always a worry at this time of the year, so I was actually surprised that we didn't have any issues that stopped us running. It really shows the preparations that have been put in by both McLaren and Mercedes-Benz have been exceptional.

This week was the first time you have worked with Lewis, did you get on well?
Really well. He is a good team mate and we get on well. We seem to have similar comments about the new car so it also gives us good platform from where to build our year together. I was really impressed with Pedro's input, he is an incredibly good driver and really important for the team. I think he can help me a lot during the year. [F1 Mclaren site]

A goal from Carlos Tevez and yet another Cristiano Ronaldo brace sealed United’s spot in Monday’s FA Cup fifth round draw.

Tottenham Hotspur came to Old Trafford and put up a brave fight – and indeed took the lead – but the Reds’ patience paid off to keep alive dreams of another trip to the new Wembley.

Juande Ramos’ side were far from favourites going into this fixture, despite thumping Arsenal 5-1 on Tuesday in the Carling Cup semi final second leg. History had been against Tottenham on that occasion – it was their first victory over their North London rivals in nine years – but to not nearly the same extent as when they arrived in Manchester.

Without a win at Old Trafford since December 1989, Spurs have endured a horrible run on the Reds’ turf and, despite going in front through Robbie Keane on 24 minutes, now see that record stretched to 20 games.

The match started brightly, with both sides venturing forward at startling pace. Wayne Rooney had two half chances in the opening five minutes; he first failed by inches to reach Edwin van der Sar’s mammoth clearance before sweeping a low Ryan Giggs cross into the side-netting.

The visitors didn’t create any firm opportunities until Dimitar Berbatov's header was cleared off the line by Wayne Rooney in the 15th minute. They had, however, shown promising signs in the early stages, stretching the Reds’ defence on a number of occasions.

Without Nemanja Vidic, Wes Brown came inside to partner Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the back four,
Tottenham seemed to be allowing Cristiano Ronaldo a surprising amount of space in midfield and a minute before Berbatov’s header was nodded wide by Rooney, the Portuguese winger found himself unmarked 25 yards from goal.

With the crowd urging the no.7 to shoot, Ronaldo duly pulled the trigger but, unusually, his aim failed, the shot skewing wide of Radek Cerny’s right-hand post.

Tottenham took heart from Berbatov’s near miss and, spurred on by a raucous travelling support, took the lead through captain Robbie Keane. Aaron Lennon collected the ball wide on the right and, despite Patrice Evra’s close attention, found enough space beyond the Frenchman to tease a low ball across the Reds’ six-yard-box.

The cross eluded both Edwin van der Sar and Rio Ferdinand, but Robbie Keane stretched out a left boot to send the ball into the net and Tottenham into a shock lead.

United prodded and probed in search of a way back into the match but too often mislaid passes in vital areas of the pitch. Still, when Ryan Giggs forced Cerny to tip over a rasping half-volley on 37 minutes you sensed the Reds were getting closer. A minute later, Tevez met Ryan Giggs’ knockdown inside the box, fired hard and low with his left foot and the job was complete.

Former Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick then fired over from 20 yards as United looked to have wrestled momentum back from the visitors. But there was still time for a scare at the other end.....

Boss delighted after tricky tie

Sir Alex admitted the Reds needed a wake-up call before going on to negotiate a difficult FA Cup fourth round draw on Sunday.

Tottenham Hotspur scored first, but a Carlos Tevez strike and a Cristiano Ronaldo double gave United a 3-1 victory.

“I think it was a fantastic cup tie and both sides contributed to that,” Sir Alex told MUTV.

“It was quite an open match – we attacked and they also had some good chances. I think we also had great opportunities to create chances, although the final ball wasn’t so good at times today.

“I think [Robbie Keane’s] goal woke us up a bit. We were looking a bit slack at the time – we were too relaxed and there was no intensity in our game.

“But we controlled most of the possession and put a lot hard work in – we had to against what was a good Tottenham side.

“I’m very happy. We were playing a top-flight team and, remember, they came bouncing into the game today on the back of a fantastic result against Arsenal.”

Tottenham’s Michael Dawson was shown the red card on 68 minutes after handling the ball inside the area. Sir Alex admitted referee Peter Walton had little choice but to dismiss the 24-year-old, although sympathised with the Spurs defender.

“It was certainly a penalty kick but whether it was a sending off… maybe it was by the letter of the law.
“Referees are put in a difficult position with the mandate regarding the last man. I’d say [today’s decision] was harsh – there’s no doubt about that. I felt sorry for the lad [Dawson].

“You have to give Tottenham credit for keeping coming at us. They gambled by bringing Jermaine Defoe on and playing three up front. We seemed to sit back a little bit and when you stand back and give players of that ability time on the ball, you’re going to have a problem.”

Kuszczak aiming for the top

Tomasz Kuszczak says he’s pleased with how he fared over the festive break when he stepped in for first-choice stopper Edwin van der Sar.

Van der Sar returned from injury in the Reds’ recent FA Cup win at Villa Park but Kuszczak remains braced for a recall.

“It’s a difficult position I’m in because I know Edwin is number one,” the Polish goalkeeper told Manchester United Radio.

“But every day I’m ready for training and I approach every game ready to play. It’s important to me to play as many games as I can.

“It was a good exam for me over Christmas and I think I did quite okay. I certainly did my best and I tried to help the team win our games.”

Although Kuszczak is acutely aware of his understudy status, he insists being at Old Trafford is beneficial to his career.

“Every single game I play for United is a step forward,” he said. “I feel more comfortable and confident each time I play and that’s what a goalkeeper needs. The Champions League experience has been very good too, so I think I’m on the way up.”

Van der Sar may be Sir Alex’s current first choice but Kuszczak says he hopes to one day dislodge the Dutchman from the number one spot.

“I’ll do everything I can to push Edwin for the jersey and I think that helps both of us. We have a good relationship and there’s healthy competition on the training field.”

Strike duo ready to fire U18s

Under-18s coach Paul McGuinness hopes United’s young strike duo, Danny Welbeck and Federico Macheda, can fire the Reds to FA Youth Cup success this season.

The pair have scored 15 of United’s 36 goals this season in league and cup matches, and will hope to fire the Reds past Carlisle in the Youth Cup fourth round on Wednesday (KO 19:00 GMT).

Italian youth international Macheda is the U18s’ top scorer this term with eight goals, including his strike in the 2-1 third round victory over Brighton & Hove Albion. Welbeck, an England U17 international, has scored seven goals this term. Together, they form a formidable partnership up.

“They are both very good players,” McGuinness told PA Sport. “Danny is still only young and has another year at this level. He’s a very talented player and all the other players respond to that.

“Federico is a very good technical player. He’s a good finisher, makes good decisions and some very clever runs. In some ways he has a style like Dimitar Berbatov. His touch is very good.”

Rome-born Macheda has made a strong impression on and off the pitch since arriving in the summer from Italy, where he was on Lazio’s books. “His English is coming on, he’s a bright boy,” added McGuinness. “He understands what we’re after and he has fitted in well with the culture of the club.”

“Federico and Danny are on a really good wavelength. That is what you want, good partnerships. When you see them in training and you look at the likes of Rooney and Tevez and the way they link up, those two lads are capable of doing similar sorts of combinations.”

Brown’s England ambition

Wes Brown is determined to feature in Fabio Capello’s plans when the new England boss picks his first squad on 31 January.

The 28-year-old defender has been almost ever-present in the Reds’ defence this season, making 20 league appearances in the absence of regular right back Gary Neville. Now he wants to be involved when England play Switzerland in a friendly at Wembley on 6 February.

Brown played just five of England’s 18 matches under Steve McClaren and was an unused substitute on a further six occasions.

But his form for United this term has been top-drawer and he may well have done enough to catch Capello’s eye.

“Hopefully that’s the case,” Brown told Manchester United Radio. “If I can stay in the United team and continue to play well then hopefully I can get an England call up.”

Fletcher wants to stay

Darren Fletcher says he is happy at United and has no intention of leaving, despite interest from other Premier League clubs.

Media reports suggest the 23-year-old midfielder’s former international boss Alex McLeish is keen on taking him to Birmingham City. But Fletcher insists he is not looking for pastures new.

“I am still happy playing for Manchester United and I am not thinking of going elsewhere,” he said. “I never heard anything about Birmingham being interested, I just know I want to be here for a long time.

“My only focus is on being ready when the manager needs me and being able to perform for the club when asked.”

The Scot has played 15 times for the Reds this season, nine times as a substitute with Anderson, Owen Hargreaves and Michael Carrick so far higher up the pecking order. And with Paul Scholes due back later this month, competition is fierce for central midfield opportunities. But as the season enters its crucial stages, Fletcher hopes this will be the time where he can make his contribution felt.

“It is frustrating because any player wants to play,” he said. “But it has been down to the form of the midfield. Fair play to Anderson, when Paul Scholes got injured, he came in and has great. The manager has stuck by him, which is what he does when you perform well.

“We will see how things pan out at the end of the season in terms of games played and what you have contributed to the squad. But I am not thinking about that just now. I’m looking short term, and I’d like to win a few trophies and hopefully go a few steps further than last year.”

Well, what a year 2007 has been for United. Winning the league was a fantastic feat and definitely one of Sir Alex’s greatest achievements. The team played a lot of exciting football and, of course, everyone played their part. But you have to say Cristiano Ronaldo has been quite exceptional over the last year. He responded in the best possible way to the criticism he received after the 2006 World Cup and I think the manager deserves a lot of credit for the confidence he gave Ronaldo. He could have wilted under the pressure, but instead he blocked out the abuse and rose to the occasion, delivering when it really mattered countless times – the true sign of a great player.

His late winner at Fulham last season stands out for me – that was a huge result and one that really set us on our way to the title. There were so many other great moments, winning at Anfield in the dying seconds with ten men, coming back from two down at Everton, the list goes on.

I’ve got extremely high hopes for 2008 and personally I’d love to see us win the Champions League again. As the manager has said on many occasions, this club should have won more European Cups and I really believe this could be our year. The squad is looking very strong and this season’s new acquisitions have blossomed since they joined. If we get the luck we need with injuries, there’s no reason why, come May, we won’t have more than one trophy in our possession.

Boss hails “incredible” Ron

Sir Alex Ferguson described Cristiano Ronaldo’s goalscoring this season as “fantastic” and “incredible” after the Portuguese winger shifted his tally for the campaign up to 22.

That figure puts him one behind last season’s total of 23, and a remarkable ten more goals than he had scored at the same stage last season.

“It’s fantastic, incredible in fact,” Sir Alex said after the game.

“We wondered at the start of last season whether he could match last season’s tally of 23. You had to say ‘why not?’

“I expected him to score more this season because he works so hard. That’s why there were no bets this season, all bets are off with Ronaldo,” he joked.

“[His first hat-trick] was always coming. He’s been close on a number of occasions but today he capped a really fine display with the hat-trick. We’re all delighted for him.”

But this was more than just the Ronaldo show. Carlos Tevez grabbed two goals, while Rio Ferdinand chipped in with another.

Likewise, it wasn’t just about the goals, it was another sterling defensive display, which Sir Alex feels could be the foundation for retaining United’s title crown.

“Our performance last week at Aston Villa in the cup was carved out of a magnificent defensive display,” he said. “It gave us the energy to go and win the game in the last 20 minutes. It was the same against Newcastle.
“You have to have good home form,” he added, alluding to United’s 11 wins from 12 at Old Trafford. “We’ve lost three games away from home, but the reason we’re top of the league is because our home form has been so good.

“It’s a hard league. You saw the results with Arsenal and Liverpool drawing, teams are taking points off one another.

“We expected it to be tough. Teams well below the top four are spending a lot of money on their squads. There is a drive for teams to improve themselves and stay in the Premier League. The points total could be lower this year.”

Hertha Berlin’s Gilberto has emerged as a candidate to give United extra cover at left back. The 31-year-old’s agent Alexandra Martins claimed agreement with United was close after talks on a new deal at his German club broke down over his demand for £1.75million a year. Gilberto’s contract runs out at the end of the season and United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to snap up the tough-tackling left-sided defender or midfielder. Gilberto said: “I have received offers from England, Portugal and Brazil. I have become accustomed to winning trophies with Brazil and would like to do the same at club level.” Hertha general manager Dieter Hoeness said: “Trying to extend his contract is a priority for us.”

Cristiano Ronaldo insists he had no problem with taking a penalty against Tottenham, despite missing one during the Reds' last defeat in December.

When asked if that rare failure was on his mind when he put the ball on the spot, Ronaldo replied: "To be honest, no.

"Sometimes you score, sometimes you miss. I wasn't thinking about West Ham - that's in the past. I needed to think about the present.

"My confidence is always positive. I took a good penalty and I scored. I'm very happy, my colleagues are happy... everyone is happy."

Ronaldo's 69th minute penalty put the Reds 2-1 up against Tottenham, who had followed their 5-1 thrashing of Arsenal by taking the lead against United through Robbie Keane.

"This game was very difficult," acknowledged Ronaldo, whose two goals followed Carlos Tevez's 38th-minute equaliser.

"We knew before the game it would be tough because Spurs are a good team and they were coming to Old Trafford with confidence after beating Arsenal in their last match.

"But I think we played better (than Spurs) and we deserved to win."

Ronaldo sealed the win with a shot that squirmed under the body of Tottenham's otherwise impressive goalkeeper Radek Cerny. It took Cristiano's tally for the season so far to 25 goals - now two more than his total for the entire 2006/07 campaign.
"That's fantastic but I need to say thank you to my team-mates because my colleagues and my friends have helped me a lot this season," said Ronaldo.

"I'm having a great season and I need to carry it on. But the most important thing is the team is playing very well, we are top of the league and in the next round of the FA Cup.

"It's very important for us to win this cup. I'm confident we can win it this season."
