Change Start Button

I’ve read a number of articles on the internet about changing the text on the Start button in XP. On more than one occasion I’ve seen references to a five (5) letter limitation when the button is renamed. I always wondered if this was true or just an assumption someone made because the default ‘start’ just happened to fit the button size. So, I decided to run a test and see if there really was a five character limit.

As you can see from the screen capture above it would seem that the five character limit isn’t etched in stone. The button expanded to accept the text I entered with no problem. I’ve been using the system for a few weeks now with no adverse effects. That’s not to say I won’t discover something down the road a bit, but for now I feel comfortable with the changes. If you’d like to try the procedure I used, the instructions follow.

Step 1 – Modify Explorer.exe File

In order to make the changes, the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows needs to be edited. Since explorer.exe is a binary file it requires a special editor. For purposes of this article I have used Resource Hacker. Resource HackerTM is a freeware utility to view, modify, rename, add, delete and extract resources in 32bit Windows executables and resource files (*.res). It incorporates an internal resource script compiler and decompiler and works on Win95, Win98, WinME, WinNT, Win2000 and WinXP operating systems. Navigate here to download Resource Hacker.

The first step is to make a backup copy of the file explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer. Place it in a folder somewhere on your hard drive where it will be safe. Start Resource Hacker and open explorer.exe located at C:\Windows\explorer.exe as shown in Fig. 01.

The category we are going to be using is String Table. Expand it by clicking the plus sign then navigate down to and expand string 37 followed by highlighting 1033. If you are using the Classic Layout rather than the XP Layout, use number 38. The right hand pane will display the stringtable as shown in Fig. 02. We’re going to modify item 578, currently showing the word “start” just as it displays on the current Start button.

There is no magic here. Just double click on the word “start” so that it’s highlighted, making sure the quotation marks are not part of the highlight. They need to remain in place, surrounding the new text that you’ll type. Go ahead and type your new entry. In my case I used ElderGeek as shown in Fig. 03.

Compare the screen captures in Fig. 02 and Fig. 03 and you’ll notice that after the new text string has been entered the Compile Script button that was grayed out in Fig. 02 is now active in Fig. 03. I won’t get into what’s involved in compiling a script, but suffice it to say it’s going to make this exercise worthwhile. Click Compile Script and then save the altered file using the Save As command on the File Menu. Do not use the Save command – Make sure to use the Save As command and choose a name for the file. See Fig. 04. Save the newly named file to C:\Windows.

Step 2 – Modify the Registry

Now that the modified explorer.exe has been created it’s necessary to modify the registry so the file will be recognized when the user logs on to the system. If you don’t know how to access the registry I’m not sure this article is for you, but just in case it’s a temporary memory lapse, go to Start (soon to be something else) Run and type regedit in the Open: field. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ SOFTWARE\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon

In the right pane (Fig. 05), double click the Shell entry to open the Edit String dialog box as shown in Fig. 06. In Value data: line, enter the name that was used to save the modified explorer.exe file. Click OK

Close Registry Editor and either log off the system and log back in, or reboot the entire system if that’s your preference. If all went as planned you should see your new Start button with the revised text.

Note: A number of users have written to say that when the text on the Start Button is changed, the Search function from the Start Button (right click) context menu ceases to function. That's true, it does, and if I ever used that particular function I'd have been aware of the problem. I don't use it, so I wasn't aware, but now you've been warned. As far as I know there are no other caveats associated with the modification.

1. Klik tombol Start > Run.

Klik ganda pada option (Default value) dan beri nama baru sesuai yang diinginkan pada Value Data.

Memunculkan Rename Pada Recycle Bin

Klik ganda pada Attributes > Edit Binary Value. Pada Value Data, ganti angka tersebut menjadi 0000 50 01 00 20.

Menyembunyikan Recycle Bin HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Explorer/Desktop/NameSpace
Hapus subkey {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}, kemudian Restart komputer untuk melihat hasilnya. Untuk memunculkannya kembali, buat kembali kombinasi angka {645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}.

Menambah Isi Shortcut Menu Pada Recycle Bin

Ronaldo wants win in Barca

Winger ready for tough test

Cristiano Ronaldo is targeting a win in Barcelona as he tries to prove the current Manchester United team is the best in the club's history.

United face Barcelona at Camp Nou on Wednesday n the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final meeting.

Portuguese winger Ronaldo is expecting an absorbing encounter in Spain, but is hoping United can secure an advantage to take back to Old Trafford.

"At this stage, no game is easy," Ronaldo told Sport newspaper. "They are very important games where the pressure is very high for both teams and maximum concentration is required.

"Anything can happen.

"Our goal is to win as quickly as possible and to get the best result in the Nou Camp. I want to win."

Fantastic team

Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted earlier this season that the squad currently at his disposal has the potential to be the best of his 20-year reign.

Ronaldo has echoed Ferguson's view, but concedes the team must finish the season with at least one trophy to justifiably be compared to previous United sides.

He added: "I believe that this team has the most talent, but this can only be confirmed at the end of the season by seeing what the team has won.

"There is a lot of talent and I believe we are going in the right direction. Match after match, we have demonstrated that we have a fantastic team, very talented and wonderful players, but at the end of the season we can give a definite answer as to whether this team is truly the best Manchester United team of all time.

"If we win the Champions League or the Premier League we will have a better idea."

Great honour

Ronaldo has scored 38 goals in a remarkable season for United, but has thanked his team-mates for helping him to set a new club record for a winger.

"I am very proud to represent this club," he continued. "I feel privileged to have played so many games at this stage.

"It is a great honour for me to demonstrate my ability on the pitch in front of 60 or 70,000 people who go there every weekend - it is amazing.

"I have improved every year and work for it, but I must also say that my team-mates have been very important in terms of what I have achieved, they gave me magnificent passes so that I could score - and I have scored some beautiful and important goals.

Wayne won't miss Wednesday

Sir Alex claims Wayne Rooney, Edwin van der Sar, Owen Hargreaves and Anderson will all be fit to face Barcelona at the Nou Camp on Wednesday.

Van der Sar, Hargreaves and Anderson were rested on Saturday at Ewood Park, while Rooney was forced off against Blackburn Rovers with a hip injury.

Rooney went down under a challenge from Ryan Nelsen midway through the second half in United’s 1-1 draw on Saturday. After a period of restricted movement, the England international appeared to loosen up but was eventually replaced by Ji-sung Park in the 90th minute.

“Wayne got a knock on the hip but I’m sure it won’t keep him out of Wednesday night’s match,” Sir Alex told Setanta Sports.

“Sometimes when you get a kick on the bone it can be very sore at the time but I expect he’ll recover.”

Personalized Boot Logo Screen

Two or three times a week I get an e-mail asking if it's possible to modify the Windows boot screen; the black screen that says Microsoft Home or Professional and has the scrolling green or blue bars. So there is no confusion what this procedure accomplishes, I'm going to start off with two images. The screen capture in Fig. 01 is well known by anyone that has used Windows XP. In Fig. 02 you see the boot screen that I modified for use on my home systems. The modified screen is quite simple in this case, but you can make it as complex as you desire during the editing phase....

*** What is an exploit ***

An exploit is a computer programm, which circumvent computer security.
There are many ways to exploit security holes. If a computer programmer
make a programming mistake in a computer program, it is sometimes possible to
circumvent security. The coding of such programs, which attack (hack) the
programming mistakes or security holes is the art of exploitation or exploit
coding. Some common exploiting technics are stack exploits, heap exploits,
format string exploits, ...

*** What is an stack exploit ***

A stack exploit occurs, if you can write more than the size of a buffer
located on the stack into this buffer. If you can write more data,
as the size of the buffer (more than 1024 bytes in this example) a stack
overflow occurs. For example:

Why a stack overflow is a security threat ? The assembler instruction 'call'

at stack. You can return to another location. The location should a pointer

Shellcode are machine instructions, which launch a shell for example.
A shellcode looks like this:

United moved powerfully towards retaining the title with this tremendous victory against old rivals Arsenal on an afternoon of high drama at Old Trafford.

Owen Hargreaves scored the winner with a fabulous free-kick after Cristiano Ronaldo cancelled out Emmanuel Adebayor's opener early in the second half. But every man in a red shirt, not just those on the scoresheet, played their part in this priceless triumph.

Hargreaves and Ji-sung Park had retained their places in midfield after impressing in midweek against Roma but Carlos Tevez had to settle for a berth on the bench, with Sir Alex Ferguson selecting Wayne Rooney as a lone striker.

Arsenal’s side showed two significant changes to the defence which conceded four goals at Anfield in the Champions League quarter-final. The Gunners made a lively start and after Adebayor’s run was halted by Rio Ferdinand on the edge of the area, Cesc Fabregas rifled a venomous shot just over the bar. CHMOD ( Change Mode )

Dalam Hal ini kita akan membahas sedikit masalah CHMOD ( Change Mode ).

apa itu chmod :

Chmod digunakan untuk menambah dan mengurangi ijin pemakai untuk mengakses file
atau direktori, dapat juga menggunakan sistem numeric coding atau sistem letter coding.
Ada tiga jenis permisi atau perijinan yang dapat dirubah yaitu :

-r untuk read.
-w untuk write.
-x untuk execute.

keterangan numeric dari sebuah permision file :

0 = tidak ada operasi di ijinkan.
1 = permisi untuk melakukan cd ke satu direktori.
2 = permisi untuk menulis.
4 = permisi untuk membaca.

setiap file mempunyai permisi untuk owner, group, and user.

untuk membuat batasan-batasan pada suatu file,
kita harus membuat suatu permisi file tersebut dengan cara CHMOD :

misalkan direktori "home" kita mempunyai default permisi 711 maka itu artinya :

7 = 4+2+1 : kamu (pemilik) dapat membaca/menulis/mengeksekusi file.
1 = 1 : semua user di group mu dapat melakukan cd/execute tapi tidak membaca dan menulis.
1 = 1 : semua user bukan group mu dapat melakukan cd/execute tapi tidak membaca dan menulis.

Misalkan direktori public_html kita mempunyai permisi 755 artinya :

7 = 4+2+1 : kamu (pemilik) dapat membaca/menulis/mengeksekusi file.
5 = 4+1 : semua user di group mu dapat melakukan cd/execute/read tapi tidak menulis.
5 = 4+1 : semua user bukan group mu dapat melakukan cd/execute/read tapi tidak menulis.

Files kamu buat di direktori public_html paling sedikit harus mempunyai permisi
644 (direktorinya harus 755) atau WWW server tidak akan bisa membaca nya
sehingga tidak bisa muncul pada web browser.

untuk mengubah permisi file index.html caranya :

chmod 644 index.html

untuk membuat direktori images dan isi file nya bisa di baca oleh semua maka :

chmod 755 images
cd images
chmod 644 *

untuk meng hidden suatu file maka :

chmod 700 nama_file.

PERINTAH-PERINTAH UNIX

Sebelum lanjut perlu diingat bahwa di Linux/UNIX semua perintah ditulis
dalam huruf kecil, dan Linux/UNIX membedakan huruf besar dan kecil.

------> ls

Ingat perintah DIR di DOS? ... nah perintah ini sama dgn DIR, gunanya
untuk menampilkan 'list' file di dalam directory.
Perintah ls juga dilengkapi dengan flag tambahan yang bisa di lihat dengan

mengetik :

ls --help ; menampilkan bantuan
man ls ; man bisa juga diartikan manual, jadi manual ls

Beberapa perintah ls yang umum adalah :

ls -l ; menampilkan informasi tambahan (l = long)
ls -a ; menampilkan hidden file (a = attribute)
ls -la

Informasi tambahan yang ditampilkan oleh flag -l menyangkut user yang
memiliki 'owns', file tanggal dan jam file itu dibuat, hak/permissions
file, dan informasi lain, contoh :

rwxr-x--x

Catatan :
karakter 1-3: user/owner permissions
karakter 4-6: group permissions
karakter 7-8: other permissions

This is what the letters mean:

r - read, permissions utk 'baca'
w - write, permission utk 'tulis'
x - (e)xecute, permission utk 'menjalankan'

Jadi pada contoh diatas :

user/owner dapat read/baca, write/tulis dan execute/jalankan file
yg satu group dgn user/owner dpt read/baca, execute/jalankan file
user lain dapat execute/menjalankan file tsb

- berarti permission tidak ada, jika ada
d sebelum permission berarti itu adalah directory

cat atau concatenate dipakai untuk menampilkan dan menulis/membuat file,
kira-kira sama dengan perintah TYPE di DOS.
Untuk menampilkan isi file ketik : "cat "
Untuk membuat file ketik : "cat > " ketik isi file dan utk
menyimpan tekan CTRL + C atau CTRL + D kalau namafile sudah ada file
tersebut akan ditimpa, jika kita ingin data ditambahkan kefile yang sudah
ada ganti > dengan >>

Menampilkan isi dari file, perlayar, tekan q untuk quit

more jilid1.txt

------> grep

Menampilkan semua baris yang mengandung pola yang diinginkan

grep kecoak jilid1.txt

akan menampilkan semua baris teks yang mengandung kecoak di file
jilid1.txt

------> man

UNIX help/manual, ketik : man untuk eksekusi.

man pwd

------> echo

echo dipakai utk menampilkan apa yang kita ketik di layar, seperti :

echo "saya belajar linux"
saya belajar linux

atau untuk membuat file, seperti :

echo "biff n" > .profile

yang akan membuat file .profile di directory aktif yg berisi teks "biff n"
atau menambah file isi file dgn mengganti > dengan >>

------> cp

copy, dipakai untuk mengcopy file.

cp jilid1.txt jilid1.txt.backup
cp jilid1.txt ~cyberbug/backup/jilid1.txt.backup

------> mv

move, mengganti nama file atau directory

mv jilid1.txt jilid1a.txt
mv backup bak

------> rm

remove, hapus file

rm jilid1.txt ; hapus file jilid1.txt
rm * ; hapus semua file di directory aktif (hati-hati!)

------> cd

change directory, dipakai untuk pindah directory, sama dengan
perintah CD di DOS

cd /root

perhatikan bahwa di Linux yang digunakan adalah / (slash) bukan \
(backslash)

------> mkdir

make directory, membuat directory

mkdir backup

------> rmdir

remove directory, hapus directory, file-file dalam directory harus dihapus
dulu sebelum menghapus directory.

rmdir backup

------> who

who digunakan untuk menampilkan user yang login ke system, hasilnya
kira-kira sebagai berikut :
